ABS Investing in Technology, Innovation and World-Class Services for Clients

Strong Growth Driven by Industry-Leading Safety and Innovation Performance Highlighted at ABS Annual Members Meeting

(NEW YORK) “ABS is pioneering safety and innovation, shaping advanced solutions across the full value chain of the markets we serve that reinforce our mission and strengthen the world-class support we provide our clients.”

That was one of the key messages from ABS Chairman and CEO John McDonald at the 164th ABS Annual Members Meeting, where industry leaders, stakeholders and maritime professionals came together to mark another milestone year for the world’s largest classification society.

The meeting featured a comprehensive program of market reviews, industry outlooks and technology showcases, highlighting an organization that continues to set the pace in maritime safety, technology and global market presence.

ABS continued to perform strongly in 2025, with the classed fleet exceeding 300 million gross tons, securing the position of the world’s largest classification organization by gross tonnage. ABS also maintained the leading position of global new order share. The company also holds top-tier positions with both shipbuilders and shipowners around the world.

ABS is also the leading classification society for port state control performance since 2017 and achieved zero lost-time injuries across its global workforce in 2025. ABS-classed vessels recorded the lowest hull and machinery casualty rates in the industry, reflecting ABS’ robust safety network and disciplined safety-first mindset.

“We are operating in a period of extraordinary change. Geopolitical pressures are reshaping trade routes, and technological advancement is redefining what’s possible across every sector we serve. Through it all, ABS has remained anchored to what has always guided us: an unwavering commitment to safety and the protection of life, property and the environment.

“In 2025, we achieved milestone progress across our classification, consulting, and software services, and we did so while maintaining the operational continuity our clients depend on. As we look ahead, our vision is clear: to pioneer safety and innovation excellence across the marine, offshore, energy and government sectors, and to lead with purpose in service of the global maritime community,” said John McDonald, ABS Chairman and CEO.

The annual meeting also featured innovation showcases featuring a demonstration on robotics and ABS’ artificial intelligence (AI) applications in maritime decision-making and operational improvement.

Members also heard from U.S. Maritime Administration Deputy Administrator Sang Yi: “The U.S. Maritime Administration is focused on strengthening the competitiveness, resilience and security of America’s maritime industry. This work is most effective when federal priorities align with the expertise and reach of organizations like ABS. The collaboration between MARAD and ABS reflects a shared commitment to advancing safe, efficient and innovative maritime operations that serve both national interests and the broader global industry. We look forward to continuing this important work together.”
